Shanghai Library is located at No. 1555 Huaihai Middle Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai. It was formed by the merger of Shanghai Library and Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology Information. It was built in July 1952 and has a total construction area of 127,000 square meters. The Shanghai Library has various reading rooms, academic activity rooms, lecture halls, exhibition halls, etc., and now has more than 55 million volumes of Chinese and foreign collections, 160,000 inscriptions, and 118,000 pieces of letter writings in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 2008, Shanghai Library was approved by the State Council as the first batch of national key ancient book protection units. The foundation stone was laid for the new Shanghai Library in 1993, and it was officially opened to the public in December 1996. It covers an area of 3.1 hectares with a construction area of 83,000 square meters. The top shape of the multidimensional stepped block is like a natural growth step, which symbolizes the accumulation of culture and the continuous climbing of human beings to the peak of knowledge.
